Banking and Fees

Written by Neil Galloway

I recently (2 years ago) switched banks. My original bank was starting to cause me some problems because it was located in my hometown and there weren't branches everywhere. To get a certified check was a pain and as soon as I left my province I would end up paying to use an ATM.

Shopping around for banks is interesting. There are fees to consider and how they structure their various accounts. My own opinion, I went with a large bank that had branches everywhere as well as affiliate banks in other companies where I wouldn't be charged a fee to use their ATM.

There are a lot of banks now with various cheap rates as well. My best advice is to shop around and open a couple of savings accounts with the bank of your choice and try them out. It shouldn't cost you anything other than a bit of your time.

We are planning to move to Canada by May 2010, and we need sound advice on Banks, which one to choose with good customer support, branches etc. Need your opinion on Scotiabank.
